Open. As in Open API. Open Data. Open Source.

2024-05-26

As the name Open Sustainability Index suggests, we believe in the power of open.

Open is essential for transparency, traceability, accountability, collaboration, reliability, and trust. These elements are crucial for the transition to a sustainable society, which is why everything we do is, by default, open.

Open Source

Our entire project is open source and available on GitHub. This enables a global community to build upon, review, and improve our work. We believe sustainability is a collective effort and strive to contribute to the rich ecosystem of open and actionable data sources and technologies, enhancing the common understanding of sustainability data to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.

We have added Open Sustainability Index to the Open Sustainable Technology list, a great resource and directory of open source technologies and data sources created by Tobias Augspurger, an open source sustainability advocate.

For those interested in contributing to open source technologies, the Climate Triage platform is an excellent resource. It lists Good First Issues from the projects featured on Open Sustainable Technology. Issues are categorized by topics such as Climate Change and Energy Systems, as well as by programming language.

We’d like to contribute to the Climate Triage initiative by listing our Good First Issues, and by highlighting the initiative as in this post, because it’s such a good example of collective action and facilitation.

We invite you to review, improve, build upon and collaborate on open sustainability data. Only by collaborative efforts we will have a chance to solve the immense challenges ahead.

Roadmap

Open API & Data

We believe that providing open, reliable, and comparable sustainability data to as many people and organizations as possible—including institutions, governments, the private sector, and individuals—will lead to an accelerated transformation and more informed decisions.

The Open Sustainability Index API is licenced under AGPL-3.0, and the data is open for anyone to use under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, for non-commercial use. We are also developing a commercial license for the private sector. If you’re interested in using the API for commercial purposes, please reach out.

There are strong use cases for commercial use of the Open Sustainability Index-data, whether as a customer, a platform, or a supplier.

We believe interoperability is crucial in addressing sustainability challenges. Thus, we are formatting and harmonizing our data sets with current and upcoming standards.

The API and its documentation are available at opensustainabilityindex.org/api. We invite and encourage you to integrate with, build upon, and contribute to it.
